The COSHH Inspections and COSHH Regulations apply to every company that either uses or produces in the workplace substances hazardous to health. This would, for example, include vapours given off by glue or paint, or fumes generated by welding operations, some types of forklift trucks, etc.
One method of controlling air-borne hazardous substances is the use of a local exhaust ventilation system (LEV).
Other legislation requiring the operation of LEV equipment: The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 1987, and The Control of Lead at Work Regulations 1988.
The COSHH Regulations require that a competent person examines LEV equipment at intervals dependent on the trade or business and the application of the equipment.
| Application | Examination frequency in months |
|---|---|
| Dust extraction | 14, but 6 for metal dust |
| Fume / vapour extraction | 14, but 6 in non-ferrous foundries |
| Shot blast units | 6, but monthly in foundries |
